We both graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2016 & 2017 with degrees in Agriculture. Neither of us were sure where those degrees would take us, but a few years later we were able to put them to good use as we set out on our adventure to start Reesor Farm. We got married in October of 2020, and moved to the farm. We knew we wanted a place to offer boarding for horses, raise our food, animals, and eventually kids, but pet boarding wasn’t really a thought in that plan.
I (Alex) have over 10 years of experience in the animal care industry, including approximately 5 years as a Veterinary Assistant, in addition to working with the WKU Agriculture Research & Education Complex as an equine and dairy cattle assistant during my time there. However, that had all but been abandoned after college in exchange for a career in Real Estate.
When we were finally able to move in to our (mostly finished) house in 2021, I was pet sitting through the “Rover” app part time to supplement a real estate career that honestly was not thriving. I knew then that my heart wasn’t really in it, but I wasn’t sure where to go next. Getting a typical 9-5 was definitely not what I wanted. I told Keith I really felt that adding “in-home boarding” to my list of services on Rover could bring me more business, even though we were barely moved in & I had nothing more to offer than two mismatched wire crates in our cluttered basement. Well, thank God for a very supportive husband because it turns out I was right!
Fast forward a few months and I was adding crates & fencing & other amenities for our “guests” as fast as I could find them. It became clear that this really had some potential. Our clients loved that their pets got to stay in our home & had lots of one-on-one time while they were away. I started to think we might be on to something!
In March of 2022, I hung up my real estate license, and jumped in full time to the kennels. I was nervous, but it was a dream come true for me and I’ve not looked back. We still board in our basement, but these days it’s a fully functional kennel setup, complete with built in suites for the pups, outdoor space with lots of room for play, cat condos, a fully equipped grooming room, and even a small retail area where we sell some of the enrichment toys, treats, and grooming products that we use and love.
We still pride ourselves on the way we do things differently from most boarding facilities. We are small, with no more than 12 dogs at any time, and we still focus on giving lots of individual attention. We offer enrichment activities, and a fully customizable boarding experience to fit your pet’s needs. We include activities such as pool time in the summer, a sand box for digging (a favorite), fetch, tug-o-war, scented bubbles and more for every stay, and offer add-ons such as longline walks, stuffed Kongs, and puzzles for more customized enrichment. We want to make sure we keep that “in-home” feel no matter how we grow.
We are so thankful for our clients that have been with us since the beginning and look forward to meeting many more as we grow and see where this journey takes us!
